Windsurf Is Now Devin Desktop: What Changed and Should You Switch?

The short answer

Windsurf still exists: Cognition renamed it Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026 through an ordinary update, and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop. The real change is the agent: Cascade stayed available only until 1 July 2026 and was replaced by Devin Local, a Rust rewrite, and the editor now opens on an Agent Command Center. There is no forced migration.

What happened to Windsurf?

If you went looking for Windsurf recently and ended up on a page about Devin, nothing is broken. Cognition — the company behind the autonomous agent Devin — renamed the editor Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026, calling it the next generation of Windsurf. The old domain now permanently redirects to devin.ai/desktop, which is why search results and old bookmarks land somewhere unexpected.

The rename shipped as a normal over-the-air update rather than a migration. Cognition says plans, pricing, extensions and features stayed the same, which is why a lot of users only noticed when the icon and the name changed.

The short version

Same editor, new name, new agent. Nothing to reinstall, nothing to export. The one real loss is Cascade, which stayed available only until 1 July 2026.

What actually changed

Windsurf (before)Devin Desktop (now)

Default screenThe editorAgent Command Center (Kanban view)
Cloud agents—Devin Cloud sessions in the same view
Plan, pricing, extensions—Unchanged

Cascade is gone, and that is the real change

The rename is cosmetic; retiring Cascade is not. Cascade was the agent that defined how Windsurf felt to use, and Cognition kept it available only until 1 July 2026 for a gradual migration. Its replacement, Devin Local, is a ground-up rewrite in Rust that Cognition says keeps Cascade’s capabilities and settings, is up to 30% more token-efficient, and adds subagents — the ability to split a task and work on parts of it in parallel.

In practice that means the muscle memory moves. The Agent Command Center is a Kanban board for local and cloud agents, with Spaces that group sessions, pull requests, files and context, which pushes you toward thinking in queued sessions rather than one continuous conversation.

Devin Desktop

The full IDE is still there, but Cognition’s pitch now centres on agents: your environment keeps running in Devin Cloud after you close your laptop, and a session can be handed between your machine and the cloud with the same context. Other features include Fast Context for finding code, Devin Review for diffs and Supercomplete for predicting your next edit. There is still a free plan; Pro is $20 a month, Max $200, and Teams $80 a month plus $40 per full seat.

Should you switch away?

Not on account of the rename. A rebrand is not a reason to move, and the automatic update means staying costs you nothing. There are two situations where looking around makes sense: if Cascade was specifically why you chose the editor, since that is the thing that no longer exists, or if you want an agent in the editor you already use, in which case GitHub Copilot or Claude Code will fit better than any standalone editor. Claude Code also runs as an extension inside Devin Desktop itself.

  • —Happy with the editor → stay. Nothing is being taken away except Cascade.
  • —Chose it for Cascade specifically → try Devin Local before deciding, then compare Cursor.
  • —Want to keep VS Code or JetBrains → GitHub Copilot or Claude Code instead.
  • —Want a single app for editing and agents → Devin Desktop and Cursor are the two real options.

Update log

  • November 7, 2026Added sources. Corrected the Cascade wording (it remained available until 1 July 2026 for migration) and the efficiency claim (“up to 30%”, not “around 30%”). Added Devin Desktop’s current plan prices and cloud hand-off. Removed unverified claims that Cognition acquired the Windsurf business and that the free tier has a daily quota.

Frequently asked

Is Windsurf discontinued?
No. It was renamed, not shut down. Cognition rebranded Windsurf as Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026 and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop. The editor is still sold, with a free plan and paid plans from $20 a month.
Do I need to reinstall or migrate anything?
No. The rebrand arrived as a standard over-the-air update, and Cognition says plans, pricing, extensions and features stayed the same. Devin Local also keeps Cascade’s settings, so you do not need to export projects or reconfigure the editor.
What replaced Cascade in Devin Desktop?
Devin Local, a rewritten Rust-based local agent. Cognition kept Cascade available only until 1 July 2026 and says the replacement is up to 30% more token-efficient and supports subagents for working on parts of a task in parallel.
Is Devin Desktop the same thing as Devin?
They are related but not identical. Devin is Cognition’s autonomous cloud agent, which takes a task and works on it remotely. Devin Desktop is the local editor formerly called Windsurf. Its Agent Command Center shows local and cloud agent sessions in one place, and sessions can be handed between your machine and Devin Cloud.
