ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Chatbot Is Best?

The short answer

ChatGPT is the safest all-rounder for most people, Claude is the best fit for writing-heavy and coding work, and Gemini is the best value if you live in Google’s apps. All three have free tiers and plans around $20. Choose on ecosystem: every ChatGPT plan includes Codex, Claude Pro includes Claude Code, and Google bundles storage and Gemini in Gmail.

How we chose

  • —Models available on each plan
  • —Price ladder from free to the top tier
  • —Tools bundled with the subscription (coding agents, storage, app integrations)
  • —Fit for writing, coding and Google Workspace users

Which AI chatbot should you use?

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the three leading general-purpose AI assistants. They overlap heavily — all three write, code, search and work with files — so the differences that matter are at the edges: which models each plan unlocks, what is bundled with the subscription, and which apps it plugs into.

This comparison is built from each vendor’s plan pages rather than from benchmark scores, which change every few weeks. Where we give a verdict, it is an editorial judgment about fit, not a test result.

Where the models stand

ChatGPT runs on the GPT-6 family: Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna, and Plus adds GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6.1 Sol. Claude’s flagship is Opus 5.5, released 22 September 2026, alongside Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Gemini’s newest model, Gemini 4 Argon, is offered from Google AI Pro upward.

ChatGPT: the default all-rounder

ChatGPT is the one to pick if you want a single assistant that does everything acceptably well. It has the widest plan ladder — Free, Go at $8 (which may show ads), Plus at $20, and Pro at $100, $200 or $500 — and every plan includes image generation, voice and Codex, with limits rising as you pay more. Plus adds custom GPTs and the larger GPT-6 models. For a non-technical user who wants one tool, it is the lowest-risk choice.

  • —Widest range of plans, from free to $500 a month
  • —Image generation, voice and Codex on every plan
  • —Custom GPTs from Plus

Claude: the pick for writing and documents

Claude is our pick for editing, long-form writing and reasoning over big documents — pasting in a long contract, codebase or report and asking precise questions. The plans back that up for heavier work: the free tier includes Sonnet 5.5, web search, file creation and connectors; Pro at $20 adds Opus 5.5, Claude Code and Claude in Chrome; Max ($100) and Ultra ($200) raise the limits. Both Claude and ChatGPT support MCP, the open standard for connecting assistants to other tools and data.

Editor’s pick — writing

If your main use is writing, rewriting or analysing long documents, start with Claude. If you also write code, Claude Pro covers both, with Claude Code included.

Gemini: the value and integration play

Gemini’s advantage is distribution and price. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid plan of the three and adds Gemini in Gmail and 400 GB of storage; AI Pro at $19.99 adds Gemini in Docs, 5 TB of storage and access to Gemini 4 Argon. Paid plans also raise your access to Gemini and Nano Banana in Google Search. Note that the free plan does not include Gemini inside Gmail or Docs.

  • —Best if you already use Gmail, Docs and Google Drive
  • —Cheapest paid entry at $4.99, with storage bundled
  • —Image generation and editing on the free plan

How to choose in one line

Pick ChatGPT if you want one tool for everything, Claude if you write, analyse documents or code for a living, and Gemini if you live in Google and care about price. The good news: all three have a free tier, so you can test your own workflow in an afternoon before paying for anything.

Frequently asked

Is ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini best for writing?
Claude is our pick for writing and for editing long documents, and its free tier includes Sonnet 5.5. ChatGPT is a versatile alternative, and Gemini is the natural choice when you write inside Google Docs, which requires Google AI Pro. This is an editorial judgment rather than a benchmark result.
Which AI chatbot is best for coding?
All three handle code, and two bundle a dedicated coding agent: Codex is included on every ChatGPT plan (limited on Free and Go), and Claude Code is included from Claude Pro at $20. For an in-editor experience, pair any of them with a coding assistant such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
Are the free versions good enough?
For casual use, yes. ChatGPT Free runs GPT-6 Luna, Claude Free includes Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, and Gemini’s free plan includes the Gemini app with image generation. You typically upgrade for higher usage limits, the most advanced models and bundled tools such as Claude Code or Gemini in Gmail and Docs.
Can I use more than one?
Many power users do. A common setup is Claude for writing and document work, ChatGPT for general tasks and its ecosystem, and Gemini for anything inside Google Workspace.
