The Best Free AI Tools (With Genuinely Useful Free Plans)
The short answer
The best free AI tools are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for chat, Perplexity for cited research, Grammarly for writing polish, GitHub Copilot for coding and Adobe Firefly for images. Each has a free plan with a recurring allowance rather than a one-off trial. Watch for teasers: Notion AI is only a trial on Notion’s free plan, and Runway’s free credits are one-time.
How we chose
- —A free plan with a recurring allowance, not a one-off trial
- —Core features usable without paying
- —Limits published clearly by the vendor
Checked: Vendor pricing and plan pages Not done: No hands-on testing or benchmarks; we compared published free-plan allowances only.

What counts as a “free” AI tool?
There’s a difference between a free tier and a free trial. A free trial gives you a few days or a handful of credits and then stops. A real free tier lets you keep using the core product indefinitely, usually with limits on volume or access to the most advanced features. Every pick below has a recurring free allowance; the teasers are listed separately at the end.
Best free AI tools by task
| Best for | Pick | What the free plan gives you | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-round AI chat | ChatGPT | GPT-6 Luna, plus limited image generation, voice and Codex | Usage limits; no larger GPT-6 models |
| Chat and writing | Claude | Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, web search, file creation, connectors | No Opus or Claude Code; 5 projects |
| Chat inside Google’s world | Gemini | Gemini app with image generation and editing; 15 GB storage | No Gemini in Gmail or Docs |
| Cited research | Perplexity | Answers with citations; 3 Pro Searches a day | 1 Research query a month |
| Writing polish | Grammarly | Grammar, spelling and tone; 100 AI prompts a month | More AI help needs Pro at $12/mo |
| Coding | GitHub Copilot | 2,000 completions a month and agent mode | Limited chat and agent usage |
| Images | Adobe Firefly | A limited number of free daily generations | Paid plans for more credits |
| Meeting transcripts | Otter | 300 transcription minutes a month | 3 lifetime file imports |
Chat: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini
All three leading assistants have free plans that are more than enough for everyday questions, drafting and brainstorming. ChatGPT Free runs GPT-6 Luna with limited image generation, voice, deep research and Codex. Claude Free includes Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 with web search, file creation, memory and connectors. Gemini’s free plan includes the Gemini app with image generation and editing, plus 15 GB of Google storage. If you only adopt one free AI tool, make it one of these; see our full breakdown in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.
Research: Perplexity
Perplexity’s free plan answers questions with citations, which makes it the right tool when you need to verify a claim rather than just generate text. The free plan includes three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month; the paid Pro plan moves to weekly and monthly limits and adds advanced models and image generation.
Writing: Grammarly
Grammarly’s free plan still does the heavy lifting: grammar and spelling correction and a read on your tone as you write, plus 100 AI prompts a month. Pro at $12 a month is the upgrade if you rewrite with AI heavily.
Coding: GitHub Copilot
Copilot Free gives you 2,000 code completions a month and agent mode in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse and Xcode, with limited chat and agent usage. It is the easiest free way to try an AI coding assistant without changing editors; Pro at $10 a month removes the completion cap.
Images: Adobe Firefly
Firefly’s free plan includes a limited number of free daily generations with access to select image, video and audio models, and Adobe describes its models as commercially safe, trained on licensed and public-domain content. The Gemini app’s free image generation is the other easy option.
Tip
Stack free tiers: a chat assistant for drafting, Perplexity for sourcing, and Grammarly for the final polish covers most knowledge work at no cost.
Free plans that are really trials
- —Notion AI — Notion’s free plan lists a trial of Notion AI and limited trials of Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes; the full features come with Business at $20 per member a month.
- —Runway — the free plan is a one-time grant of 125 credits, not a monthly allowance.
When is it worth paying?
Upgrade when you hit usage limits often, need the most advanced models for hard tasks, or rely on a tool for paid work where speed and limits matter. Until then, the free tiers above will take you a long way.

Frequently asked
- What is the best free AI tool overall?
- For most people it’s a free AI chatbot — ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini — because one tool covers writing, brainstorming, summarising and answering questions. Pair it with Perplexity for cited research and Grammarly for writing polish.
- Are free AI tools safe to use for work?
- Generally yes for non-sensitive tasks, but check each tool’s data policy. Free tiers sometimes use inputs to improve models. For confidential work, use a paid or business plan with data controls, or avoid pasting sensitive information.
- Do free AI tools have usage limits?
- Almost always. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini limit usage on their free plans, Perplexity allows three Pro Searches a day, Grammarly 100 AI prompts a month and Copilot 2,000 completions a month. Hitting those limits is the usual reason to upgrade.
